Il Tamerlano: Vivaldi’s “pastiche”
The tragedia per musica (“tragedy in music”) Il Tamerlano, ovvero la morte di Bajazet (as the full title reads) is a pastiche, i.e. a work in which new and pre-existing compositions, both by the composer himself and by other composers, come together.
This was an established practice at the time, which in no way detracts from the irresistible incisiveness of Vivaldi’s writing.
The opera tells the story of the Ottoman sultan Bajazet, defeated and taken prisoner by the ruthless Mongol leader Tamerlane.
The drama of power intertwines with love intrigues in a complex plot: a succession of passions, emotions and feelings captured in beautiful baroque arias.
Accademia Bizantina recorded Il Tamerlano in an album released in Naïve’s Vivaldi Edition, available on all major streaming platforms.
